Q&A with Acer MD, Gaba Cheng

COMPANY NEWS: Acer recently introduced its new business model. We interviewed MD, Gaba Cheng about himself, Acer and the new changes...

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Gaba Cheng, I am the Managing Director of Acer Australia and New Zealand. I have had a long tenure at Acer, first joining the company in 2007 as National Product Manager. I previously lead the Consumer Client Products Group in 2012, then shifted to a General Manager role in 2015. Over the past 15 years, I have held various senior roles within the Acer Oceanic team with increasing scale and complexity.

In 2022, in line with stepping into my current role as Managing Director, I have been working with the Acer Australia and New Zealand team to review our business model, looking at areas to improve efficiencies and streamline operations, inspire and grow talent within the business and strengthen relationships with partners and customers, all whilst building on the existing Acer Australia and New Zealand platform.

What products and services has Acer been delivering to ANZ?

As Acer looks to the future, it is focused on enabling a world where hardware, software and services will fuse with one another to open up new possibilities for consumers and businesses alike. From service-oriented technologies, the Internet of Things and gaming to sustainability initiatives and innovations, Acer is dedicated to the research, design, marketing, sale and support of products and solutions that break barriers between people and technology.

Our products include laptops and computers in addition to a wide range of commercial and consumer solutions. Acer has a strong pipeline of innovative products coming to Australia and New Zealand in 2023. This includes new display monitors in the Vero line-up which utilise recycled plastic and packaging and a new range of connected devices including 5G and WiFi router products. We are also introducing Acerpure, a new brand to the local market offering a variety of high quality, high efficiency air treatment products. At Acer, It is not merely about making things different, but about setting new benchmarks and breaking new ground.

With a new business model in place, Acer Australia and New Zealand is in a strong position for growth. We are committed to ensuring that the quality of services and solutions the company provides its partners and customers is not only maintained but also enhanced over the long-term.

Which sectors does Acer operate in?

Under the new model featuring three distinct business units, Commercial, Retail and Distribution, Acer Australia and New Zealand will continue to strengthen its presence in Education, Government and Corporate sectors each with a dedicated sales and support team focused on client engagement and growth. Re-energising the SMB/SME Channel market is also a focus of the Distribution segment with strategies already in advanced stages and to be announced in due course.

What’s changing with regards to Acer’s business units?

The objective of the new business model is to make Acer ANZ more dynamic, innovative and responsive in the current market. The new business model marks the start of an exciting journey for Acer Australia and New Zealand with a strong and strategic local team in place.

The three distinct business units, Commercial, Retail and Distribution with a dedicated sales and support team focused on client engagement and growth, have been implemented in order to support Acers growth aspirations in 2023 and beyond.

Are there any personnel changes to go with this?

As part of the new business model there has been a number of new appointments within Acer, both external hires and internal promotions, bringing a wealth of new talent and industry experience to the business. Cameron Anderson, who has been with Acer for over 15 years, has taken on the position as General Manager – Acer Australia Commercial Business and Acer New Zealand. Anna Viengkham, formerly New South Wales Retail Manager, has been appointed to National Retail Business Manager, heading up Acer’s new Retail Business Unit. Additionally, Acer ANZ is thrilled to welcome Ali Lokhanwala, who will head up the Channel and Distribution Business Unit in his role as Channel Sales Manager. Acer has made some innovative products with recycled materials. How have they been received by consumers and industry, and will we see more?

For the third consecutive year, Acer was listed in the top 5% of companies in S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook 2023 for our sustainable business practices. This acknowledgement reflects Acer’s commitment to the environment, innovation, and integrated solutions.

Acer took major steps towards environmental responsibility and re-imagining the manufacturing process with the launch of the Aspire Vero – Acer's green-pioneer laptop (Green PC). Encapsulating sustainable design resolutions, the Aspire Vero represents the first of many sustainable product innovations and initiatives by Acer.

Continuing the momentum and recognition for achievements in environmental, social and governance (ESG), the Vero line of green products built with recycled materials locally will be expanding to offer customers even more options to reduce their carbon footprint.
